May is National Drug Court Month
Every May communities from all over the country come together to celebrate the success of Drug Court Programs. It is a time to celebrate the success of each participant in active recovery and honor the staff that works tirelessly to ensure the participants’ success in the program.
What are Drug Courts?
Drug Courts were designed for criminal defendants and offenders that committed drug and alcohol-related crimes. The sole purpose is to help the participants recover from substance abuse disorder. Drug Courts can be an alternative to incarceration and also provides counseling, rehabilitation, and treatment methods that help participants on their road to recovery.
Drug Courts have become an effective solution to substance abuse-related crimes. The programs are designed to hold the participant accountable for their recovery. They are required to maintain sobriety and work towards a healthy lifestyle.
What are the Types of Drug Courts?
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there are several different types of drug courts and in each state, the programs look a little different. However, the most common ones are as follows:
Drug Courts
Specialized court docket programs that help criminal defendants and offenders, juvenile offenders, and parents with pending child welfare cases who have alcohol and other drug dependency problems.
Adult Drug Courts and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Dependence
This guide highlights the use of MAT for opioid dependence in drug courts. It reviews effective medications and provides strategies to increase the use of MAT in drug court programs.
Family Treatment Drug Courts
FTDCs, alternatively known as dependency drug courts or family drug courts, use a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to serve families who require substance use disorder treatment and who are involved with the child welfare system.
